Jim Cropper and Fleet win Ryedale

 2nd April, 2008

UNDETERRED by the bitterly cold and windy weather conditions of Saturday, Jim Cropper and Fleet took a convincing victory at the Ryedale open at Nova Lane, Middleton, Pickering, while Alison Salisbury and Joe gained their first novice title.

Running was over a mostly flat course with a fetch of approximately 300 metres. The majority gathered their packets of four Mule gimmer hoggs right-handed. Once lifted, the sheep were manageable around the course and good to pen, but it was the lift that often proved difficult.

Reluctant to leave the top of the field at times the sheep would stand and face the dogs or would split and make back to the holding pen, resulting in some dogs failing to bring them. None of the sheep was re-run and their behaviour remained consistent throughout. David Bristow, of Murton, judged the entry of 40.

First to the post, Jim Cropper and Dan had a re-run as their sheep shot back to the holding pen before Dan reached them. Using the same packet that was put out further down the field, they set the standard gaining 76 of 100 points.

However, it was with run 16 that Jim and Fleet had the winning round. After losing two marks from his right-hand gather, Fleet dropped three from his lift where he managed his hoggs well. For minor line deviations and a slightly wide turn at his master’s feet he lost three marks.

With the wind distorting whistles and making the sheep touchy, few competitors were successful in negotiating all three obstacles. Hearing appeared to be particularly difficult down the first leg of the drive and many handlers misjudged the last obstacle.

Jim and Fleet caught both drive gates well, losing just five marks throughout their driving for deviations and slightly wide turns. A slight slip at the pen cost two points, then three were lost at the shed where the sheep were hard to separate. Scoring 82 of 100 Fleet took the title with a clear four point advantage.

Two-year-old Fleet was bred by J.B. Fothergill, of Hawes, out of Gail and sired by John Harrison’s Calderdale Jim.

Running at 30, Sandy Beaton and Pershore Glen were the runners-up on 78. They gathered left-handed and had a very good start losing just a single point from both their outrun and lift. Unfortunately, they missed the last obstacle and this cost them the title.

Sheepdogs rise to challenge

After the trial date had been set, crowds of people arrived to see the judge make his final deliberations and the fate of the black sheep decided.

John Atkinson, the shepherd at the Escrick Park Estate and an international sheepdog trialler, set up this novel event last Sunday using their black Hebridean sheep.

It attracted 60 entries, including several international competitors and the sheepdog trial may become an annual event.

Hebrideans are smaller than most white conventional sheep, but wilder, especially as these are reared in a large flock of 500 head, plus lambs, on Skipwith Common. They were fairly tricky on the day, but did not disturb the composure of Jim Cropper from Lancashire, who was judged the winner.

Charlie Forbes Adams presented the rosettes wearing his three piece suit made from Hebridean wool, woven in Mull. He donated the proceeds to the Friends of Skipwith Common.

The 700 acre common south of York is one of the largest blocks of heathland in northern England and internationally important. Half of the area is made up of scrub and woodland, so not the easiest place to manage sheep.

Border Collies, of course, can manage anywhere.  -  YPN 20/1/07  -
